RSM Parkin was the senior NCO of the senior infantry regiment in the British army. Guards regiment RSMs wore the full rank badge on both sleeves of their service/battle dress (and this continues to this day). He was photographed just outside Ypres in 1914, and went on to complete his career in the RFC and then the RAF:

James Edward Parkin. Born 1/9/1878, Derby. Enlisted in the Grenadier Guards on 18/11/1895. Posted 1st Battalion. Lance Corporal, 21/12/1896 to Gibraltar, September 1897. Subsequently served in the Nile Expedition, Sudan (Queen's Sudan Medal & Khedive's Medal with clasp 'Khartoum'). NCO (Drill Sergeant) in charge of the Bearer Party at Edward VII's Funeral, 1910 (Royal Victorian Medal). Promoted RSM, May 1912. To France with 1st Battalion, October 1914. MiD on 20/11/1914. Transferred to RFC, August 1915 and commissioned Lieutenant QM. Created MBE, June 1918. Retired as Wing Commander, 1924. Recalled 1940 and served as Adjutant at RAF Uxbridge. Retired May 1945. Died 1967.
